2026 Swine Web Hall of Fame Inductees: Honoring José Batista Sobrinho & Joseph W. Luter III

Swine Web is proud to announce the 2026 Hall of Fame inductees, recognizing two individuals whose leadership and long-term contributions helped shape the modern global pork industry.

This year’s inductees, José Batista Sobrinho and Joseph W. Luter III, each transformed regional operations into major international companies, influencing production, processing, and global protein supply on a scale few could have imagined when they began.

José Batista Sobrinho

Founder of JBS – Brazil

José Batista Sobrinho started with a small butcher shop in Brazil and steadily expanded operations through disciplined reinvestment and a focus on long-term growth. Over the decades, this modest beginning developed into JBS, today one of the world’s largest protein companies with operations spanning beef, pork, poultry, and processed foods.

His leadership emphasized efficiency, consistent quality, and a commitment to expanding market access. Sobrinho’s early focus on exports and scale helped establish Brazil as a major global meat supplier. His legacy continues through the international reach and influence of JBS within the pork industry and beyond.

Joseph W. Luter III

Former Chairman & CEO of Smithfield Foods – United States

Joseph W. Luter III is widely credited with transforming Smithfield Foods from a regional processor into a global leader in pork production and processing. Through strategic acquisitions, vertical integration, and investment in modern processing capacity, he led Smithfield through a period of unprecedented growth.

During his tenure, the company expanded into international markets, built extensive supply-chain capabilities, and became one of the most recognizable names in global pork. His leadership helped define many of the operational and marketing models still used across the industry today.

Why They Are Being Honored

Both inductees represent foundational leadership within the global pork sector. Their work helped accelerate modernization, improve processing capacity, expand international trade, and set the stage for many of today’s production systems and supply chains.

The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals whose influence continues to impact producers, packers, consumers, and the broader agricultural community.
