Stories and Perspectives from the Farm – Harvest Edition Part 2, By Wanda Patsche

Farm Updates

Well, I can see the end of harvest! I am only a few hours away from being completely done. I am ready to be done and back to having a “normal” life.

Unfortunately, we have had a few breakdowns. But nothing that was significant. This is what I saw as I crossed the field with my tillage equipment. At first, I thought it was a big rock. But, nope! It was a disk from my DMI ripper. I took pictures and sent them to my husband so he would know what we needed to fix it. I am so glad he has the expertise to fix these types of problems.

If you recall from my last Substack about the issue we had with the emissions control equipment on our combine, well, I just received the bill in the mail. Over $6000 for the repairs! Unreal! And the frustrating part is that the emission control equipment has nothing to do with the actual operation of the combine. We literally run the combine for 16 days out of the entire year, and yet, we are required to have this equipment on the combine. This needs to be reevaluated and changed. EPA, are you listening?

Have You Heard About the Soybean Issue?

I would be surprised if you haven’t. It’s been all over the news. The issue is that China has not purchased any of our soybeans and the price is about $11 per bushel. First, the price is nearly the same as a year ago. The biggest problem we have is costs. Everything is more expensive.

As of this morning, it has been reported that China will be purchasing soybeans from us. Let’s hope they hold up their end of the bargain as they have let us down in the past.

Brownfield Ag

Mark Dorenkamp from Brownfield Ag interviewed me about our harvest a couple of weeks ago. If interested, you can listen to it here!

Now What?

Now that harvest is nearly complete, I can start to focus on other things. One of the items on our list is to meet with an ag succession attorney. I am going to be honest, this whole succession process causes me anxiety. Always thinking about wanting to make the right decision. We went through this process about 6 years ago, but we need to revisit our decisions.

I know I don’t need to be anxious. God tells us that. Everything will work out.

I just need to put that on repeat.

The other thing I want to put near the top of my list is to be more regular about writing in my Stories and Perspectives from the Farm Substack. I really do like writing and sharing stories and my perspective. I would also like to know if you have questions or if there is a topic I should write about. I would love to hear from you!

I will leave you with one of my favorite scenes during harvest. Watching the seagulls!

Until next time!
