At the 2025 World Pork Expo, Rachel Fishback of Swine Web sat down with Ross Thompson, Hog Slat’s Swine Ventilation Director, to discuss the growing impact of ECM motors in pork production. Their conversation highlighted the key advantages that ECM technology offers producers, particularly as energy efficiency and precision ventilation become top priorities in the swine industry.
What Sets ECM Motors Apart?
According to Thompson, two primary attributes distinguish ECM (electronically commutated motor) technology from traditional induction motors: efficiency and precision.
“ECM motors are typically 10–20% more efficient than standard induction motors when running at full speed,” Thompson explained. “And when the motor speed is reduced, that efficiency advantage increases—up to 30%.”
In addition to energy efficiency, ECM motors provide precise airflow control. Unlike traditional motors, ECMs maintain constant torque, allowing them to adjust in real-time to changes in pressure, such as high wind resistance. This ensures consistent ventilation performance throughout the barn, even when external conditions fluctuate.
Why ECM is the Way Forward
With rising energy costs and a growing focus on efficiency, producers are seeking innovative and adaptable technologies. ECM motors provide a long-term solution for reducing energy costs while enhancing overall barn environment.
“Better airflow means more consistent temperatures, reduced stress, and better pig performance,” Thompson explained. “ECM motors give us the ability to fine-tune ventilation like never before – delivering the right amount of airflow, exactly when it’s needed.”
