Behind the Barn: The Critical Role of Dispatch in Swine Production

At Iowa Select Farms, success in swine production depends on more than animal care inside the barn—it takes an entire network of people working in sync. One of those key people is Jamie Hayner, a dispatcher based in Iowa Falls, whose work ensures that barns, supplies, and transportation all run on time.

“I like to stay busy,” Jamie says. “But more than that, I feel part of something here. Everyone works together, and I know what I do matters.”

Coordinating Biosecurity and Barn Prep

Jamie manages one of the most critical pieces of the production puzzle—the weekly wash schedule. Each week, she oversees 25 to 30 barn washes, making sure sites are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before the next group of pigs arrives.

“Clean barns ready to go are critical for pig health, site biosecurity, and the success of the finishing team,” she explains.

Using Excel, she builds the weekly plan, finalizes schedules with supervisors, and makes adjustments as last-minute changes come in. From feeders that weren’t emptied to barns that weren’t properly soaked, Jamie is often the one getting the call to resolve issues quickly.

Keeping Supplies and Transport Moving

Her role extends beyond barn prep. Jamie partners with the supply chain team, including Sasha Snyder, to coordinate deliveries for up to 20 sites every week. With only 3–5 days between cleanout and pig placement, timing is everything.

She also tracks 200 feeder pig and undoublestock loads, plus 140 wean pig and cull loads weekly, managing all driver, truck, and trailer assignments through the company’s intranet system. Accurate information isn’t just about efficiency—it’s a frontline tool for biosecurity and herd health.

Finding Her Place in the Industry

Jamie brought dispatch experience to Iowa Select Farms, along with time spent in childcare, retail, and healthcare. But she says this role is where she’s meant to be.

“I love getting the right pieces in place so things run smoothly,” she says. “There’s a rhythm to it—and I like being part of the team that keeps it all moving.”

A Profile in Teamwork

Jamie’s work may be behind the scenes, but it’s at the heart of Iowa Select Farms’ operations. Her coordination ensures that barns are clean, supplies arrive on time, and transportation is seamless—all essential elements in raising healthy pigs and protecting herd health.

At its core, her role is about teamwork. And for Jamie, that’s what makes it meaningful: “I like being part of the team that keeps it all moving.”
