App Adds Precision to Breeding Decision

These days, the list of apps you can download is endless, but for pork producers, one that enhances breeding decisions may be priceless. With this in mind, the Hendrix Genetics swine app is harnessing the latest technology to give clients a competitive edge.

We have developed our own app to gather data needed for running breeding programs on farm.

The original application was created a decade ago to run on a handheld, tablet, PC or laptop. It included modules like track and trace, and genetic defects and losses, with all measurements linked to an individual animal for maximum precision. All data was sent to a breeding database, where it was processed and used to estimate genetic breeding values for each animal.

This year, the company is taking its technology to another level as it crafts a new mobile version of the app that can run in Android or IOS and works both offline and online.

Reaching for the clouds

The latest version of the app automatically sends any data entered to the Cloud. We can use all kinds of digital IDs for track and trace including RFIDs, barcodes, QR codes and manual input. We also connect to every piece of equipment and every sensor used on farm. All data and outputs go back to the app after processing so users can access it easily and get feedback on breeding values..

This new and improved app is a promising tool for boosting the bottom line. The focus is on digitizing every action in the barn, taking the information gathered and processing it with the latest statistical models or AI technology. The end result is a predictive model to optimize a breeding program and maximize genetic improvements for producers.

The company is currently working with all farms running the original app and converting them to the new version. For clients, this will mean faster data inputs, better connection of all data sources on farm and, most importantly, more accurate selections.

We are giving users the power to make more efficient use of data, receive real time feedback on the actions they take and be better equipped to decide on next steps. They can use a system that is fully connected to their phone, laptop or PC and know what is going on with their breeding program at all times.

While other companies are working on apps to gather data, Hendrix Genetics is taking it a step further, compiling information on an individual level and facilitating track and trace from all sources available.

“We are tracking everything that happens in the supply chain and linking data to the genes so we can improve product lines for the next generation. Our focus is not just on creating an app, but on creating value for clients by transforming data into predictions of a product’s performance. We are taking the genetic information from your farm and guiding you on what to do next and what impact that will have on your breeding program and your animals.”

Going forward, Hendrix Genetics will combine the data generated by the app with other information gleaned from the supply chain. This will further aid users as they seek to improve breeding results in areas like input costs, meat production and optimal use of feed.

For both the company and its clients, this is a brave new world that offers a wealth of opportunity.

“We’re excited by the challenge of taking a leadership role within the supply chain. All of our efforts around the app, R & D and our breeding program are about connecting the dots and creating the future.”
