The Dutch Pork Sector in Transition: More Innovative, Demand-driven, and Smaller Toward 2030

New regulations, an evolving trade environment, and shifting consumption patterns are driving change in Europe’s pork supply chains. Local issues will apply additional pressure to the Dutch pork sector. Pressure from the Dutch nitrogen policy, for example, coupled with market factors affecting Europe at large will drive the pork sector in the Netherlands to contract toward 2030.

With higher production standards, Europe is becoming less competitive in global markets – a challenge for the Netherlands, given its heavy reliance on trade. Therefore, restoring profitability across the whole pork supply chain will be key to preventing a terminal decline in the Dutch pork sector.
