Wisconsin Raised Program Connects Consumers with Local Pork

The Wisconsin Pork Association (WPA) has officially launched its Wisconsin Raised program, a new initiative designed to strengthen the connection between consumers, local farmers, and in-state processors—while putting more locally raised pork on plates across the state.

WPA Executive Vice President Keri Retallick says the idea grew out of increasing consumer demand for local products, a trend amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re going to have a dedicated page on our website for Wisconsin Raised, along with brochures that help people find the same high-quality butterfly pork chops they enjoy at the State Fair,” Retallick explains. “They’ll also be able to order pork burgers and other products directly from local processors participating in the program.”

For consumers, the program offers more than just proximity—it’s about customization. By working directly with Wisconsin processors, shoppers can select the exact portion sizes and cuts they want, whether it’s an eight-ounce chop, a twelve-ounce chop, or something in between.

How It Works
The Wisconsin Raised program is open to both pork producers and processors who meet specific criteria:

  • Producers must be Wisconsin-based, maintain current PQA Plus Certification, Transporter TQA certification, participate in the Swine Health Improvement Program, implement sustainability measures, and agree to random third-party verification.

  • Processors must operate under state or federal inspection, follow program protocols such as segregating Wisconsin Raised products, display the program’s logo, and participate in periodic verification checks.

A Fair Showcase
The Wisconsin State Fair has become a natural launchpad for the program. Visitors to the Pork Shoppe have already experienced the flavor and quality of locally raised pork, and now the program aims to make that experience accessible year-round.

Get Involved
The WPA is actively seeking more producers and processors to join the Wisconsin Raised network. Interested parties can learn more by visiting wppa.org/wisconsin-raised or by calling 608-723-7551.

By formalizing and promoting the Wisconsin Raised label, WPA is betting that the pride and quality of local pork production will resonate with consumers and help drive more sales for Wisconsin’s pork industry.
