Producer Profile: Sunset Colony, Montana Building From the Ground Up with Purpose and Precision

Established in 2022 as a branch of Martinsdale Colony, Sunset Colony is nestled near Roundup, Montana, and is already making waves in the swine industry. With 93 members and counting, the colony has taken on bold initiatives—none more significant than the construction of a new 2,700-sow farrow-to-wean barn.

From the beginning, the focus has been on building a sustainable, high-performance operation rooted in smart decision-making. After extensive evaluation, the colony chose Topigs Norsvin’s TN70 gilts for their outstanding ability to produce and wean large, robust litters. Combined with Z-line purebreds and in-house gilt management via InGene, Sunset Colony was well-equipped for a productive start. The barn was stocked in December 2023, with breeding following shortly thereafter.

“The TN70 sow’s ability to produce and wean large, healthy litters made it the right choice for our herd,” noted a member of the management team.

Construction was a true team effort. Both contractors and colony members contributed to the barn’s development, which was designed from the ground up to meet California’s Prop 12 standards. Every aspect was built with animal welfare, precision, and performance in mind. A Fancom ESF (Electronic Sow Feeding) system was installed for gestation, ensuring each sow receives individualized nutrition. Meanwhile, InGene gilt rearing areas were integrated to maintain a closed herd and enhance biosecurity.

Sunset Colony also prioritized disease prevention, incorporating Danish-style entry systems and shower protocols. RFID technology further strengthens individualized sow care and tracking. The farrowing area features 140 crates and a 23-day weaning protocol, all aimed at delivering healthy piglets while supporting sow comfort and performance.

A standout feature of the operation is its commitment to raising antibiotic-free (ABF) piglets for the first 23 days post-birth. The Fancom FaroTek feeder system plays a critical role, delivering optimal nutrition to young piglets in this crucial stage.

Strong Early Results

In just six months, Sunset Colony shipped over 46,000 pigs—an impressive feat for a new unit. Key performance metrics include:

  • 93.6% adjusted farrowing rate

  • 15.38 piglets born per sow

  • 14.28 liveborn

  • 13.5 piglets weaned per sow

  • 14.22 lbs average piglet weight at shipping

As more P1s and P2s enter the herd, performance numbers are trending upward.

Looking ahead, Sunset Colony remains focused on continuous improvement, animal care, and operational excellence. With a thoughtful start, a cutting-edge facility, and a dedicated team, the colony is well-positioned for long-term success in the swine sector.
