In an industry built on family, resilience, and community, the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation is once again demonstrating how agriculture extends far beyond the farm gate.
Through its evolving Henry’s Heroes initiative, the Foundation—alongside Iowa Select Farms—has honored 1,480 military-connected youth across Iowa with “Proud Military Kid” T-shirts, recognizing their role and resilience during the nationally observed Month of the Military Child.
This year’s initiative reflects a deeper alignment between two core commitments: supporting youth and standing behind military families. It’s a meaningful intersection—one that reinforces the role agriculture plays not just in feeding communities, but in strengthening them.
“The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation is committed to supporting Iowa’s military community,” said Laura Noehren, Foundation Program Manager. “Providing ‘Proud Military Kid’ shirts is one way we can recognize the important role these young individuals play in military families.”
More Than Recognition—A Reflection of Values
Across the pork industry, conversations often center around production, efficiency, and innovation. But stories like this serve as a reminder: people remain at the heart of the system.
Military families—much like farm families—operate within a framework of sacrifice, adaptability, and long-term commitment. For the children in these families, those values are lived daily.
The Month of the Military Child, highlighted by initiatives like Purple Up! Day, brings national attention to these contributions. But at the local level, it’s programs like Henry’s Heroes that turn awareness into action.
“Military children show incredible resilience,” shared Erin Coogler, Iowa National Guard Child and Youth Program Coordinator. “Recognizing them ensures their experiences are valued and reminds them their contributions do not go unnoticed.”
A Broader Commitment to Community
This initiative is part of a larger, sustained effort by the Foundation to support those who serve. Programs such as:
- Pork for Patriots — supporting Veterans Day events
- My Veteran Hero — recognizing Iowa veterans
- Pork Care Packages — delivering over 17,000 pork coupon books annually to active military members
Together, these efforts reinforce a consistent message: agriculture’s role in community leadership is not occasional—it’s foundational.
The Bigger Picture for the Industry
Iowa Select Farms, one of the largest pork producers in the United States, continues to demonstrate how scale and responsibility can work together—not just in production, but in impact.
With 242,000 sows, 800 farms, and over one billion pounds of pork produced annually, the company is a major economic driver. But equally important is how that scale is leveraged to support rural communities, families, and causes that matter.
Swine Web Perspective
At a time when the industry is navigating complexity—from labor to regulation to sustainability—stories like this cut through the noise.
They reinforce a simple but powerful truth:
The strength of the pork industry isn’t just measured in output—it’s measured in its commitment to people.
And in recognizing military-connected youth, the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation is investing in something even more important than production metrics:
the next generation of resilience.
