Located near Riceville in Northeast Iowa, Erickson Sow 23 is home to 3,500 sows and one of the most experienced, close-knit teams at Iowa Select Farms. Under the leadership of Mary Kraft, the team has built a reputation not only for operational excellence, but for a deep commitment to each other, their pigs, and the future of pork production.
“This work takes more than one set of hands,” said Mary Kraft, Sow 23 Manager. “It takes heart — and this team has it.”
The dedicated crew includes Dean Reddel, Julie Hase, Teresa Schlotterback, Lindsay Larson, Zach Hanson, Helen Coronel Paiz, Daniela De la Cruz Ramos, Ben Doty, Esme Hernandez Perez, Cameron Mayer, and Ronnie Nightingale. Together, they bring years of experience to every stage of the sow farm’s daily operations.
Breeding for Success
Led by Lindsay Larson, the breeding team—Zach and Dean—focuses on the foundational details that drive farrowing success. Breeding close to 170 sows weekly, the team’s focus on timing, precision, and animal care is unwavering.
“Every successful farrow starts with our attention to detail in breeding,” said Lindsay. “We’re always looking to improve.”
Tasks like estrus detection, artificial insemination, and accurate record-keeping are second nature for this crew. Their ability to identify open animals early and maintain strong conception rates speaks to their consistency and pride in the work.
Farrowing with Purpose
On the farrowing side, Julie Hase leads a strong, supportive team including Teresa, Ronnie, Cameron, Ben, Daniela, Esme, and Helen. With around 180 farrows per week, each member plays a vital role in ensuring piglets get a strong, healthy start.
“I have a tremendous farrowing team,” said Julie. “If we finish our own work early, we help out elsewhere on the farm. That’s the kind of teamwork we believe in.”
Their day begins with a strategy session in the breakroom before heading into the barns, unified in purpose and prepared for the challenges of the day.
Culture of Commitment
Under Mary’s guidance, Sow 23 has become a model of excellence not only in productivity but in culture, collaboration, and care.
“We’re not just raising pigs,” Mary said. “We’re raising the future.”
This team’s dedication is a powerful example of what’s possible when experience, heart, and teamwork come together in pork production. Every piglet raised is a reflection of the pride they take in their work — and in each other.
Swine Web proudly recognizes the team at Erickson Sow 23 for setting a high standard in care, commitment, and collaboration. Your work is not only essential — it’s inspiring.
