Purdue Honors Three Leaders in Animal Agriculture with 2025 Distinguished Alumni Awards

Purdue University’s Department of Animal Sciences has announced the recipients of its 2025 Distinguished Animal Sciences Alumni Awards, recognizing three standout graduates whose work has significantly advanced animal agriculture and veterinary medicine.

This year’s honorees represent a broad spectrum of impact, from public service to swine production leadership:

  • Dr. Bret Marsh, DVMLifetime Award
    A longtime champion of veterinary medicine and public health, Dr. Marsh is celebrated for his decades of leadership and service to the livestock industry. His contributions have shaped policies and elevated standards across state and national levels.

  • Eric SheissMid-Career Award
    Recognized for his innovation and leadership in the livestock sector, Sheiss has made his mark in operational management and swine production systems. His efforts have improved efficiencies and set new benchmarks in animal agriculture.

  • Nicholas TharpEarly Career Award
    A rising leader in animal sciences, Tharp is known for his commitment to advancing animal health and production practices. His early career achievements already show a strong trajectory of influence in the field.

“These awards reflect the depth of talent and passion coming out of Purdue’s Animal Sciences program,” said Paul Ebner, Department Head. “We’re proud to celebrate these alumni and their dedication to improving animal agriculture.”

Award recipients are selected based on leadership, career achievements, and contributions to their communities beyond the workplace. Eligibility is tied to when recipients earned their first degree from the department, spanning early career (2009–2019), mid-career (1993–2008), and lifetime recognition (1992 and prior).
