n a notable leadership transition for the pork processing sector, Texas-based Kiolbassa Smoked Meats has appointed Michael Johnson as its new president. The move marks a significant moment for the family-owned company, which has grown into a nationally recognized brand in premium smoked sausage.
Johnson’s story with Kiolbassa is one of deep roots and steady growth. What began as a summer internship has evolved into an 18-year career that included pivotal roles such as Director of Marketing, SVP of Organizational Development & Finance, and most recently, Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer. He holds an MBA from Texas Tech University and has been instrumental in embedding lean manufacturing principles and values-driven business strategies into the company’s culture.
His appointment comes as former President Bill Wagner transitions to Executive Vice-Chairman, where he’ll focus on long-term planning and mentorship, particularly within the finance department. Wagner was the company’s first non-family president, having led since 2022.
Joining Johnson in shaping Kiolbassa’s future is Jerry Carnes, Vice President of Sales, who will now serve on the senior leadership team with expanded management responsibilities—a signal of Kiolbassa’s ongoing investment in strategic sales leadership.
Founded in 1949 by Rufus and Juanita Kiolbassa, the company remains a cornerstone of San Antonio’s meat industry and has grown into a national brand known for its handcrafted, slow-smoked sausages made from premium cuts of meat—with no fillers, just real pork and beef.
As the pork industry continues to evolve, Kiolbassa’s leadership reshuffle reflects a balance of tradition, innovation, and growth-oriented stewardship.
Swine Web will continue following leadership and innovation developments across the pork value chain.
