Iowa Select Farms recently honored the retirement of Roy Alden Sr., the breeding department head at the Jensen GDU (Gilt Development Unit), after 13 years of dedicated service. Known for his work ethic, leadership, and humor, Roy Sr. was described as the “heartbeat” of the farm team.
His retirement marks not only the end of a remarkable career but also a celebration of three generations of family working side-by-side at the same farm. Roy’s son, Roy Alden Jr., serves as the farm manager, while granddaughters Daisy and Jealousy Alden also joined the crew, making the Jensen GDU a true family affair.
“I’ve been lucky to work beside my dad for most of my career,” said Roy Jr., highlighting the unique dynamic of a multigenerational team. “My dad always showed me what it means to step up, lead with heart, and teach others—usually with a bit of humor mixed in.”
Team members praised Roy Sr.’s influence across the farm. Raul Romero Gonzalez, GDU supervisor, noted his consistent focus and leadership, while Jeremiah Hall, Director of Gilt Development, reflected on the healthy competition Roy inspired through his high performance and commitment to excellence in animal care. “His legacy is going to last for a long time,” Hall said.
Beyond his professional impact, Roy Sr. has passed down not only his knowledge but also strong family bonds and values. “Working with my grandpa and dad has brought us all closer,” said Jealousy. Her sister Daisy added, “I’ve learned so much from my grandpa about how to be the best caretaker for the animals… what I loved most was seeing a whole new side of him—funny, charming, always cracking jokes.”
As Roy Sr. steps into retirement, he plans to spend more time on his favorite hobby—collecting, fixing, and painting cars.
Swine Web congratulates Roy Alden Sr. on a well-deserved retirement and thanks him for his lasting contributions to the pork industry and Iowa Select Farms.
