What began as a job has turned into a legacy for Dean Reddel, who is proudly celebrating 25 years as a Heat Check/AI Specialist with Iowa Select Farms.
“I never imagined my career would turn into this,” Dean shared. “What started as a job turned into something I’m truly proud of.”
Born and raised in Riceville, Iowa, Dean has stayed close to his roots — living and working in the very community he’s always called home. Growing up on a diversified farm with cattle, pigs, and chickens, his early years instilled a strong connection to agriculture, animal care, and the value of hard work.
“It’s not glamorous work,” Dean said. “But it’s work that matters. These animals depend on us daily.”
Dean began his journey with Iowa Select Farms in 1999 at Erickson Sow 23 — a farm he still proudly refers to as “home.” Through harsh winters, scorching Iowa summers, and shifts in industry practices, Dean has remained a constant presence, bringing consistency, skill, and care to every day on the farm.
Yet for Dean, his career has been about more than just the animals. It’s about the people who’ve made each day worthwhile. Over the years, many coworkers have become like family, building a culture grounded in mutual respect and trust.
“I value the camaraderie we’ve built at this farm,” Dean said.
“And we owe it all to her,” he added, gesturing toward Mary Kraft, the farm’s longtime manager. “She’s the best.”
Outside of work, Dean embraces the outdoors and the simple joys of life. Whether it’s camping, fishing, or sitting by a fire on summer evenings, he makes the most of every moment. In winter, he trades fields for snow, enjoying snowmobiling adventures in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with his sons.
Above all, family remains Dean’s greatest pride. He cherishes time spent with his children and grandchildren — affectionately known as “Papa Dean” — and feels fortunate they live close by, allowing him to be present as they grow up.
