FARM UPDATE – May 13 By Wanda Patsche

Wow, it’s been crazy busy lately. We just wrapped up planting—but not without a few hiccups. Unfortunately, we had to replant some corn acres after a deluge of rain a while back. I even had to bring out the rotary hoe to break up the crusted soil in that same field.

My job? I ran the field cultivator ahead of the planter (yep, that’s me in the photo). I can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time! My husband teases me that he needs to get me a smaller rig.

Some of the first fields we planted look great. I can’t believe how big the corn is already—especially for May 13 in southern Minnesota!

The weather this past week felt more like July: upper 80s, dry heat, and windy. Things are starting to dry out, which is clear from the lilac bush in my yard—its flowers are already drying up. Hard to believe I’m saying this so early in the growing season, but we could use some rain.

As for our pigs, sadly, they’re sick. And we’re not alone—many pigs in our county are battling illness. Our veterinarian believes it’s flu and/or PRRS. It’s never fun when pigs are sick. We’ve lost more than a few, which is heartbreaking.

Since it’s a virus, there’s not much we can do except treat them supportively and monitor for secondary infections. We’re hopeful that with time and care, they’ll pull through and start feeling better.

Off the farm…
I still can’t believe it, but our oldest granddaughter went to prom—and is graduating! Where does the time go?

I also had the joy of attending a concert in Austin, MN, where my brother conducted his high school orchestra. I surprised him by bringing my granddaughter along. It was special—both of us played the viola in school, and my brother played the cello. His love for music continues to inspire us.

I thoroughly enjoyed the concert—any other orchestra fans out there?
