HOUGHTS FROM 109 KILDEE
Register soon for SowBridge and PorkBridge distance education programs
ISU professor and swine specialist Ken Stalder said industry issues and participant input drive program content and speaker selection in both programs. SowBridge is for those who work with sows, boars and piglets, and with genetic and reproductive issues. PorkBridge offers participants six opportunities each year to hear from industry experts on topics relevant to those who are involved in grow-finish operations. Cost remains the same: SowBridge is $200 for the 12-session schedule and PorkBridge is $100 for its six sessions, and registration is now underway. These programs are offered via teleconference with participants receiving materials ahead of each live session. And just a note that while the pandemic affected a lot in 2020, all of our sessions were held as planned with no dropped calls or other interruptions.

ISU extension offering 2021 Farm Bill Decisions webinar series
The next deadline for Agriculture Risk Coverage/Price Loss Coverage sign-up is March 15. This annual decision is unlike the previous farm bill, when producers made a one-time decision for their operation that was in place for the life of the bill. ISU Extension economists and farm management specialists are providing a virtual series of 10 sessions at no cost from January 19 to February 19. All sessions are free and open to all, and those interested can register for the session(s) they wish to attend through one online form. This news release has details and a link to the webinar series page https://www.extension.iastate.edu/news/virtual-farm-bill-meeting-series-planned-2021

PRODUCTION TIP
Be weather-wary
It might be sunny with temps in the 30s today; yet we know that adverse winter weather can strike at any time. Remember to keep feed and supply deliveries current in order to ensure availability during times of closed roads or power outages. Also, plan on alternative options for delayed marketings of pigs or the delivery of new pigs. Being wary and ready for what winter can bring helps in being prepared, for your family and your operation.
