A longtime dairy family is entering the pork industry to diversify. The Diekemper family recently built a 2,480 head wean-to-finish pig barn outside of Carlyle, IL. Friends, family, and the local community were invited to the barn for an open house and meal to celebrate the addition to their farm.

Jason, Cody, Chad and Josh Diekemper are all part of the third generation that plan to manage the pig barn. During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Josh said “In order to keep all of the family members on the farm, we are adding this finishing barn to give us more opportunity and to diversify our farm.”

More than 300 people attended the open house to show support for the family and get a look inside before pigs move in. This allows time for the barn to be washed and sanitized before the pigs arrive in the following weeks. New technology is implemented, such as: automatic fans and ventilation, 24/7 access to feed and water, and a controlled environment make for safe living conditions for pigs.

“We (myself and cousins) are looking forward to what the future of agriculture has for us, “said Jason Diekemper. Those who were present could sense the comradery and friendship that the family members uphold.

The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and the Illinois Livestock Development Group (ILDG) hosted the event. ILDG is a coalition of Illinois ag groups committed to expanding and growing the livestock industry. Members include: IL Beef Association, IL Corn Marketing Board, IL Farm Bureau, IL Milk Producers’ Association, IL Pork Producers Association, and IL Soybean Association checkoff program.

Other sponsors of the event were: Ag Property Solutions, Clinton County Farm Bureau, Farmweld, First National Bank in Carlyle, Frank & West Environmental Engineers, HogSlat, Illinois Pork Producers Association, Illinois Livestock Development Group, Maximum Ag Technologies and The Maschhoffs.
