Swine Web Summary: NPPC Weekly Capitol Report – Week Ending May 16, 2025

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) highlights key wins and ongoing efforts in its latest Capitol Update, now also available in an audio format.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ U.S.-China Trade Tariff Pause Brings Relief
The U.S. and China agreed to temporarily reduce tariffs by 115 percentage points for 90 days, offering a short-term reprieve for U.S. pork exports. Tariffs on U.S. pork had reached 172%, severely limiting access to the Chinese market. NPPC welcomed the move and emphasized the need for continued collaboration to reduce trade barriers.

πŸ›οΈ Pork Priorities Progress in House Ag Budget
The House Agriculture Committee passed its fiscal 2026 budget reconciliation bill, which includes full NPPC funding priorities:

  • Preparedness for foreign animal diseases (FADs)

  • $15M annually for Feral Swine Eradication

  • Major investments in export programs like the Market Access and Foreign Market Development programs
NPPC continues to push for a fix to California Prop. 12 in future legislation.

πŸ’° 100% of NPPC Tax Priorities in Ways and Means Package
The House Ways and Means Committee passed a tax package that includes:

  • Permanent Qualified Business Income Deduction

  • 100% Bonus Depreciation

  • Estate Tax Exemption increase

  • Expanded Section 179 expensing
NPPC backs these pro-agriculture provisions and urges Congress to keep them intact.

⚠️ NPPC Urges Animal Health Exemption in Section 232 Investigation
NPPC is asking the Commerce Department to exempt animal health products from its national security probe into pharmaceuticals. Tariffs could raise costs for essential products used to treat and prevent livestock diseases, hurting animal welfare and producer margins. Non-feed production costs now total $46 per hog.

πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ U.S.-Mexico Relations Strengthened
NPPC’s Maria Zieba met with Mexico’s Agriculture Secretary to discuss trade and animal health. With nearly $2.6B in pork exports to Mexico last year, NPPC stressed the importance of strong bilateral relations to support U.S. producers and jobs.

About NPPC
NPPC represents over 60,000 pork producers, advocating for sound trade, tax, and animal health policies to support the sustainability of the U.S. pork industry.
