Senator Durbin Meets with Illinois Pork Producers to Discuss Trade Impacts

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin recently met with representatives from the Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) to discuss the ongoing challenges facing pork producers as a result of previous trade policies and tariffs, particularly those connected to former President Trump’s trade war with China.

Durbin acknowledged that while some of the tariffs were introduced years ago, their effects are still being felt today by pork producers across Illinois and the Midwest. With China being a major export destination for U.S. pork, producers have expressed concern over lost market share and long-term uncertainty.

During the meeting, IPPA highlighted key issues such as the need for expanded export opportunities, support for fair and transparent trade practices, and relief from regulatory burdens that continue to challenge the industry. Durbin emphasized the importance of standing with Illinois producers and ensuring their voice is heard in national policy discussions.

“We need to ensure that Illinois farmers and pork producers have strong, reliable access to international markets,” Durbin stated. “Their success supports our rural economies and global food supply.”

The meeting served as an opportunity for the pork sector to advocate for policies that promote trade stability and position U.S. pork to remain competitive on the global stage.
