SDSU Extension invites swine producers and allied industry members to attend the 2023 SDSU Swine Day on Nov. 7 in Brookings.
The day lasts from 9 a.m. until about 4 p.m. at Club 71 in the Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium on SDSU’s campus, and will include a student poster competition, keynote speakers, expert presentations and breakout sessions. It is free to attend.
Ryan Samuel, assistant professor and SDSU Extension Swine Specialist, said everyone is welcome, though the day will be especially beneficial for swine producers and allied industry members.
“We look forward to sharing the current research, teaching and SDSU Extension programs we’re doing with swine,” he said. “The facilities and resources we have are due to the support of producers, state organizations and allied industries. This is a chance to give back to them on the investment they’re giving us.”
Continental breakfast will be served at 9 a.m. and lunch at noon. SDSU Department of Animal Science Head and Professor John Jaeger will provide an animal science update at 10 a.m. Samuel will present on the We Care Sustainability program at 11:30 a.m.
Keynote speeches are at 10:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The morning keynote speaker is Steve Meyer with Partners for Production Agriculture, an agricultural risk management and consulting agency. The afternoon keynote speaker is Frank Mitloehner, a professor and air quality specialist in the University of California, Davis animal science department.
After lunch, there will be three presentations from SDSU faculty: Crystal Levesque, associate professor of animal science, on health/nutrition interactions; Eric Weaver, assistant professor of animal science, on feeding higher soybean meal (SBM); and Ben St-Pierre, associate professor of animal science, on healthy microbiomes.
At 3:35 p.m., there will be a meeting of the SDSU Swine Education Advisory Council. All other attendees are invited to choose one of two breakout groups: an undergraduate session with recent graduates or to learn more about the construction of an all-steel swine building.
