Penn State Launches Swine Health Monitor Training for Farmers and Industry Workers

As part of its continued commitment to strengthening swine health and biosecurity across the industry, Penn State Extension is offering a new training program for individuals interested in becoming Certified Swine Health Monitors.

The training is tailored to farm workers, managers, and anyone involved in pork production who may be responsible for assessing pig health and identifying early signs of illness. This initiative supports enhanced disease prevention and monitoring, key priorities for maintaining herd health and overall industry stability.

Participants will receive education on how to recognize common swine diseases, collect diagnostic samples, and report findings in a timely and accurate manner. Certification as a Swine Health Monitor allows trained individuals to assist veterinarians and play a more active role in protecting animal health.

The course, developed with industry feedback and veterinary input, combines virtual sessions with in-person evaluations to ensure a high standard of practical knowledge and application.
