The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) is now accepting applications for its FY26 Local Meat Processing Grant, a new $3 million funding initiative aimed at strengthening in-state meat processing—including pork operations—and improving the state’s local food system.
“New Mexico livestock producers need access to reliable, local processing options,” said Jeff Witte, New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture. “This funding helps strengthen local food systems, create economic opportunities, and improve meat processing capacity across the state.”
The program was developed during the 2025 legislative session in response to growing demand for better infrastructure, value-added capabilities, and more resilient meat supply chains. The grant offers a major opportunity for pork processors and mixed protein operations to invest in upgrades without the burden of matching funds.
What the Grant Covers
Eligible funding categories include:
-
Equipment purchases (e.g., refrigeration, cutting equipment, packaging lines)
-
Facility upgrades (renovations or expansions)
-
Regulatory compliance and food safety improvements
-
Byproduct disposal system upgrades
-
Value-added processing (e.g., smoked pork, sausage)
-
Supply chain optimization (cold storage, logistics tech)
Funds must be expended by July 2029, providing processors time to plan for meaningful investment and implementation.
Who Can Apply
The grant is open to New Mexico-based processors that engage in livestock slaughter or meat processing, including pork. Public waste authorities and value-added providers may also apply if their activities tie directly to meat processing.
There is no matching fund requirement, making this a highly accessible program for independent processors and small to mid-sized operations.
How to Apply
Applications are open now and must be submitted by July 31, 2025, through NMDA’s official grant portal. For assistance or questions, contact NMDA Marketing Specialist Nick Frazzini at nfrazzini@nmda.nmsu.edu.
