Malaysia Emerges as Promising Market for U.S. Pork Exports

Malaysia, traditionally a challenging market for pork due to its Muslim-majority population, is showing unexpected promise for U.S. pork exports. The country, which is 64% Muslim, has a significant ethnic Chinese minority (20%) with strong cultural ties to pork consumption. The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) reports that Malaysia recently streamlined its certification process for foreign meat plants, allowing easier registration for U.S. pork facilities. This change, coupled with increased demand due to local African swine fever impacts, led to a significant rise in U.S. pork exports, reaching $16.3 million in 2023 and on track to grow by 50% in 2024. The new process contrasts with the more stringent requirements for beef, which must meet halal standards.
