Recognition highlights compassion, inclusion, and the power of pigs to connect people.
The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has been awarded the Leadership in Community Award by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig at the 13th Annual Iowa Ag Leaders Dinner. The award recognizes Bacon Buddies®, a one-of-a-kind initiative developed by IPPA in collaboration with Special Olympics Iowa.
This honor shines a spotlight on how Iowa pig farmers live out the We Care principles—especially the commitment to community support. The Bacon Buddies program brings Special Olympics athletes, FFA, and 4-H members together for a shared experience in showing pigs, learning about animal agriculture, and building meaningful relationships in front of a live audience at the Iowa State Fair.
“The Bacon Buddies event always brings a smile to my face,” said Matt Gent, IPPA Past President and pig farmer from Wellman. “It’s a powerful way to show how much Iowa pig farmers care about giving back and strengthening community ties.”
More Than a Show – It’s a Movement
Since its 2019 debut, Bacon Buddies has grown statewide. In 2023, IPPA launched “Bucks for Bacon Buddies,” a grant program providing up to $500 to county pork organizations hosting local shows. That effort led to 31 Bacon Buddies events at county fairs in 2024.
These events provide:
-
Confidence and connection for Special Olympics athletes
-
Mentorship and empathy for youth participants
-
A public platform to highlight inclusion, leadership, and the human side of pig farming
Statewide Praise
“These awardees have made a significant impact on Iowa agriculture and our rural communities,” said Secretary Naig, who recognized IPPA alongside Nationwide Agribusiness, Pheasants Forever, and the Iowa Association for Agricultural Advancement. “They play an integral role in developing young leaders and ensuring Iowa remains a global ag leader.”
Bacon Buddies is more than a program—it’s a celebration of compassion, inclusion, and leadership in agriculture.
