Hormel Foods Corp. has announced a significant commitment to sustainability by pledging to reduce its annual packaging material by 10 million pounds over the next six years. This initiative is part of the company’s broader effort to promote sustainable practices across its operations.
The Austin, Minn.-based company plans to achieve this reduction through a combination of optimizing materials, promoting new technologies, and working closely with its suppliers. “By enhancing our packaging material requirements, we aim to make a substantial impact,” Hormel stated in a recent news release.
A key component of this initiative is the introduction of “How2Recycle” labels, which Hormel aims to include on 95% of its branded retail items sold in the United States by 2030. This move is designed to ensure that Hormel’s packaging is recyclable, furthering the company’s sustainability goals.
In addition to these efforts, Hormel plans to collaborate with organizations that share its commitment to reusable packaging. The company is also developing internal policies and goals that may involve providing financial support to these groups.
The initiative, named the “20 By 30 Challenge,” emphasizes research, innovation, optimized packaging weight, and improved shipping efficiencies. Hormel’s focus on sustainable packaging is expected to significantly contribute to reducing waste and supporting environmental sustainability in the food industry.
