Governor Signs Legislation Advancing SDSU Swine Facility Expansion

A major investment in swine education and research is moving forward following the signing of new legislation supporting expansion of the swine facilities at South Dakota State University.

The legislation authorizes funding for expansion of the university’s wean-to-finish swine barn, strengthening research capacity and hands-on training opportunities for students pursuing careers in pork production and animal science.

Strengthening Research and Education

The expansion will allow more pigs born within the SDSU system to be raised through finishing, increasing the university’s ability to conduct applied research relevant to commercial pork production.

Key benefits of the project include:

  • Expanded research capacity to support nutrition, health, genetics, housing, and management trials

  • Enhanced student training, providing practical experience in modern swine production systems

  • Stronger industry collaboration between producers, allied industry, and university researchers

As a land-grant institution serving a state with a strong livestock sector, SDSU plays a critical role in developing the next generation of pork industry leaders. Investments like this ensure students graduate with experience in facilities that reflect today’s production standards.

Supporting Competitiveness in Pork Production

Modern, research-driven facilities are foundational to maintaining productivity, sustainability, and global competitiveness in pork production. Expanding swine research infrastructure helps ensure:

  • Producers have access to science-based solutions

  • Innovation continues in areas such as feed efficiency, biosecurity, and animal care

  • The regional pork industry remains economically strong

Construction on the swine facility expansion is expected to begin later this year, marking another step forward in aligning education, research, and industry needs.

For producers and industry stakeholders, continued investment in university swine facilities signals long-term confidence in the future of pork production and the importance of research-backed progress.
