DanBred Achieves €5 Per Slaughter Pig Through Genetic Progress

DanBred has once again set a global benchmark in genetic performance, reporting an impressive €5 gain per finisher pig over the past two years. The milestone reflects measurable progress in piglet survival, feed efficiency, sow longevity, and overall profitability across DanBred herds worldwide.

Driving Breeding Efficiency

According to the newly released Results for DanBred Pigs 2025 report, the company’s breeding progress is driven primarily by data-backed improvements in robustness and efficiency. Over the past two years, traits related to strength and resilience accounted for 73% of overall genetic progress, while productivity and reproduction contributed 18% and 9% respectively.

Christian Fink Hansen, Director at the Pig Research Centre in the Danish Agriculture & Food Council, emphasized the importance of the data behind the results.

“Our results are based on a large and qualified data set, which is a major strength,” Hansen said. “The report shows clearly what breeding delivers today and what we expect in the future.”

Performance Highlights

DanBred’s genetic advancements have produced consistent improvements at the production level. In just two years, producers have seen an average increase of two more weaned pigs per sow per year, along with a 1.6 percentage point rise in piglet survival. Among finishing herds, production value per pen has increased by 5–7% annually.

The top 10% of DanBred sow herds reached 41.9 pigs weaned per sow per year and 82.1% piglet survival, while the leading finisher herds achieved feed efficiency of 2.23 kg feed per kg gain and an average daily gain of 1,162 grams. Together, these gains translate to a production value of €141 per pen per year.

Torben Aarris, CEO of DanBred, highlighted how these results reinforce the company’s leadership.

“These results show that our genetics are leading both in terms of productivity and profitability. The scale of our data proves that DanBred continues to have a clear global advantage.”

Looking Ahead

DanBred is the only genetics company publishing a long-term forecast of expected breeding progress. Future gains are projected at €2.48 per finisher pig per year, driven primarily by continued advancements in piglet survival, sow survival, and litter gain.

The report underlines DanBred’s commitment to measurable progress and transparency, offering producers worldwide confidence that its genetics will continue to deliver robust, profitable results well into the future.
