One of the most uplifting traditions at the Iowa State Fair is back for its sixth year. On Saturday, August 9, the Bacon Buddies® pig show will bring together 16 Special Olympics Iowa athletes and 4‑H/FFA youth in the Swine Barn for an unforgettable evening of connection, community, and inclusion.
A partnership between the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and Special Olympics Iowa, the Bacon Buddies® event pairs individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with youth mentors from 4‑H and FFA. Together, they experience the joy and responsibility of showing pigs on one of the state’s biggest agricultural stages.
“This is truly one of our favorite events of the year,” said Linda Schroeder, IPPA board member and pig farmer from Remsen. “The energy in the show ring is incredible, and you can’t help but leave with a smile.”
Each athlete is partnered with two youth mentors who help guide them through the process of pig handling, showmanship, and judge interaction — offering valuable lessons in teamwork and leadership along the way.
John Kliegl, president and CEO of Special Olympics Iowa, sees Bacon Buddies® as more than a show.
“This program teaches our athletes responsibility, friendship, and social inclusion beyond the playing field,” Kliegl said. “We’re thankful to Iowa Pork, FFA, and the State Fair for continuing to support this powerful experience.”
The movement has grown far beyond Des Moines. This summer, 41 county fairs across Iowa hosted their own Bacon Buddies-style events, expanding the reach and impact of this initiative statewide.
The 2025 Bacon Buddies® event takes place Saturday, August 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Swine Barn at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. All are welcome to attend and support these inspiring participants — many of whom will be showing pigs for the very first time.
