Record Number of Proposals Submitted for SHIC’s 2025 Research Plan

The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) has received a record-setting 57 research proposals in response to its 2025 Plan of Work, underscoring growing industry engagement in proactive swine health solutions.

According to Dr. Lisa Becton, Associate Director at SHIC, proposals came from 19 different organizations, including 14 universities, one government agency, and four private companies. These submissions align with SHIC’s five strategic pillars and are aimed at addressing pressing knowledge gaps in swine health.

“The research is very important because it mirrors priorities and needs identified by our stakeholders, including producers and veterinarians,” said Dr. Becton. “These proposals focus on high-impact areas such as transportation and plant biosecurity, novel diagnostics, environmental surveillance, and the investigation of emerging diseases.”

The review process is underway and will continue through June and July, conducted by a volunteer task force of subject matter experts. The goal is to prioritize research that enhances the pork industry’s ability to prevent, detect, and respond to emerging disease threats.
