A‑Frame Acres: Where Tradition, Transparency, and Humane Pig Farming Meet

Tucked into the rolling farmland of southwest Iowa, A‑Frame Acres is more than just a pig farm — it’s a living legacy rooted in sustainability, transparency, and humane animal care. Owned and operated by Ron Mardesen, the farm is named after the modest A‑frame huts that were once used for outdoor farrowing. Today, those structures represent something bigger: a deep commitment to raising pigs the right way.

At A‑Frame Acres, pigs are raised outdoors with room to roam, root, and bask in the sun. This pasture-based system allows them to behave naturally — a core value for Mardesen and a standard aligned with the expectations of Niman Ranch, the premium pork program that A‑Frame Acres proudly partners with.

“They need to be able to run and root and just be pigs,” Mardesen says. “This way, they’re healthy — and they show you that every day.”

Mardesen’s approach emphasizes both animal welfare and farm integrity. Every pig follows a strict vaccination protocol. If a pig does get sick and requires antibiotics, that animal is pulled from the Niman Ranch supply chain — no exceptions.

“It’s not about being perfect,” Mardesen explains. “It’s about doing what’s right for the animal and standing by that decision with integrity.”

Beyond daily farm life, Ron has emerged as a leading voice in sustainable agriculture. He’s participated in Niman Ranch’s Farmer Resilience Panel and regularly shares his experience to help others adopt practices that are better for animals, people, and the planet. His passion stems from growing up on the same land he farms today, learning from his father and grandfather before him.

This summer, A‑Frame Acres is opening its gates as part of Practical Farmers of Iowa’s 2025 Field Day series. Visitors will have a chance to see the farm firsthand, ask questions, and observe a production model that blends heritage techniques with modern stewardship.

“Farming like this takes time and work,” Mardesen reflects, “but it’s worth it. I’ve had good people support me, and I want to pay that forward.”
