Swine health updates on African swine fever meetings scheduled in Michigan

154

Educational meetings about African swine fever are scheduled in January. Each meeting will cover what pork producers need to know and how to plan for a potential outbreak in the United States and Michigan.

Michigan State University Extension, Michigan Pork Producers Association and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) have teamed up to address African swine fever, an important topic for pork producers. Educational meetings will be hosted throughout the state that focus on protecting the health of Michigan’s pork industry.

Representatives from National Pork Board will present their viewpoint on the likelihood of an outbreak in the United States, industry experts will discuss how pork producers can prepare for continued production in the event of an outbreak (secure pork supply planning) and MDARD leadership will discuss their role in working with producers in such an event.

Meeting Agenda:

  • African Swine Fever – National Pork Board update and viewpoint
  • Preparing for What If – What do producers need to know?
  • The Key to Continuing Business during an Outbreak – My farm’s secure pork supply plan
  • MDARD’s Expectations for Producers

Pork producers will walk away from these meeting having a better understanding of what will happen if there is a case of African swine fever identified in Michigan, how farms will be quarantined and what will be required for a movement permit if you are in an infected area.

Dinner will be included. Please RSVP to ensure meals will be provided for all attendees at: https://events.anr.msu.edu/2019SwineHealthMeetings/.
