Learning from the past to handle the future
Although it’s been five years since the porcine epidemic diarrhea outbreak became the pork industry’s obsession, lessons learned from that time continue to impact people and animals, in a positive way. A primary example is the creation of a new Rapid Response Corps. This team has been developed by Iowa State University and the Swine Health information Center, spearheaded by Paul Sundberg of SHIC and Derald Holtkamp from ISU. Experience with other disease investigations (PRRS, anyone?) has informed the approach, plan and process of the new program, and Holtkamp is optimistic that the new team will build on those results for future success. Tips to reduce antibiotic use from Danish pig nutrition experts
Danish pork producers are noted for low levels of antibiotic use and high health and performance in their piglets. How do they do it on such a continuous basis? An article from Pig Progress says getting pigs off to a good start is key, and lists eight tips to follow, five of which are early diet/nutrition-based. The first three: Aim for 20% protein, drive feed intake, avoid standard soybean meal. Field trials underway for feral swine toxic bait
The USDA-APHIS Wildlife Service is field testing toxic bait as a method of selective removal of feral swine. The first trial, in Texas, showed promise: lethal to 70 percent of the feral swine near the bait stations and no non-target species accessed the bait from those stations. Refinements to the bait form will help decrease likelihood that feral swine will eat more of it and non-target animals such as birds and raccoons will have less access to crumble remains when the swine move away from the stations. What’s in the toxic (and tasty) bait? The active ingredient is high levels of sodium nitrate, preservative used to cure meats like bacon. Dealing with fatigue
During handling and transportation a hog may become fatigued as a result of stress induced by the environment (temperature and humidity), genetic predisposition, soundness problems, health and nutrition, and/or rough handling. Efforts to decrease causes of fatigued pigs help increase likelihood of safe handling and marketability of pigs, as well as better pork quality and ease of labor. Look for opportunities to eliminate fatigue in your operation and reap the benefits.

Annual survey shows continuing strong farming interest among Iowa youth
Two-thirds of Iowa FFA members survey at the 2018 Iowa State FFA Convention said they plan to farm after completing their education, and more than 90 percent of those are interested in livestock or a combination of livestock and crops farming.  Other results: nearly 70 percent current live and work on a farm; 63 percent raise crops and livestock; and 67 percent said they have a very positive attitude toward agriculture’s future in Iowa. The survey, conducted by Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, was completed by more than 230 students. Two Iowa companies on Global Mega Producer list
National Hog Farmer has released its 2018 Global Mega Producer list — hog farms with more than 100,000 sows from around the world — and two Iowa companies are on it. Iowa Select Farms from Iowa Falls and AMVC Management Services from Audubon are among the 11 U.S. producers and 27 worldwide. Together these producers own 8.2 million sows and are spread across eight countries. Other U.S. companies near to Iowa on the list include The Maschhoffs, Triumph Foods, Pipestone System and Carthage System.
