Nathan Smith from Kansas Smith Farms, How does your Hog farm celebrate? August 7th 2012

Here is how we celebrate at Kansas Smith Farms:

Fun!
Food!
Free Stuff!!

What’s not to love about that?

This is what our Leadership Team puts on at the end of every quarter for the whole company. It is a way to say, “Thanks!”  We call it “The Rally”. We invite all 130 employees to come to the main office on a Friday afternoon for 30 minutes of fun. We include door prizes (pork loins), games ( $100 for the winner), ice cream, sodas, review “Best Ever” production numbers and then give away free stuff to everyone ( T-shirts, hats, key chains, cups, etc.).

Here are 3 Reasons every Hog Farm should have a regular Rally:

1.)    Show gratitude – These people are feeding the world!
2.)    Have fun together -
3.)    It helps everyone step back to see the big picture

Here are the 5 Keys to a Successful Company/Farm Rally

1.)    Remember: It will never be perfect. Keep improving your gatherings.
2.)    Somebody will always complain about it. Don’t forget about the other 90% who enjoyed it
3.)    Focus on fun. Don’t make it too complex or boring!
4.)    It’s not about you, it’s about them.
5.)    Always have food, free stuff and FUN!!!

How do you celebrate?

About Nathan:

Hi, my name is Nathan Smith and I am the Modern Hog Farmer.  During the day, I am the Leadership Director of Kansas Smith Farms. We have about 100 great and dedicated people and a lot of pigs. We care for about 10,000 sows and raise about 250,000 hogs per year. My purpose here is to be honest and open about hog farming. I want to share the lessons I have been learning while raising pigs for 7 years. I used to think that working in animal agriculture was a boring, discouraging, ungrateful, and stinky industry to work in. But I have changed my mind and here is my story.
