Judge Reduces Smithfield Fine From $50 Million To $2.5 Million

POLITICO reports:

North Carolina plaintiffs who won a nuisance lawsuit against Murphy-Brown, a subsidiary of Smithfield that contracts with an industrial-scale hog farm in eastern North Carolina will walk away with a total of $2.5 million in punitive damages instead of $50 million after a federal judge today reduced the amount awarded by a jury according to a cap on damages set by state law.
